New York City’s streets are more dangerous than ever with the leaderless Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, a newly emerged Therian group, at war. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and although the THIRDS round up more and more members of the Order in the hopes of keeping the volatile group from reorganizing, the members of the Coalition continue to escape and wreak havoc in the name of vigilante justice.

Worse yet, someone inside the THIRDS has been feeding the Coalition information. It’s up to Destructive Delta to draw out the mole and put an end to the war before anyone else gets hurt. But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

You're on time. Good. I like that. Follow me. I'm Sergeant Anthony Maddock. You can call me Sarge or Maddock. Frankly, I'm not surprised Sparks approved this. Things have been a little crazy lately with the Order and the Coalition. I gotta admit, I’m surprised she volunteered Destructive Delta. They’re good at what they do. No doubt about it. They also have their own way of doing things. I’ve been informed Lieutenant Sparks gave you a list of suggestions on dealing with them. You best listen to it if you wanna make it out of this in one piece.

Here we are. Unit Alpha. Behind those glass doors are our toughest Defense agents, our sharpest Recon, and the agents who bring it all together, Intel. Back to your list of suggestions from Sparks. Whatever it says about Agent Keeler, you do as it says. You listening? I’m not kidding. You got any problems with him, you come find me. Do not under any circumstances confront him yourself. You got that? Also, it’s pretty likely you won’t end up with any usable material for your editorial. At least nothing that comes directly out of his mouth. He drops the “F” bomb more times than my eldest son’s gotten himself into trouble. If you don’t know how often that is, allow me to impart this nugget of wisdom. It’s an impressive amount. Seriously, it should be that boy’s middle name. You obviously haven’t met him yet. I suggest you come equipped. Full tactical gear. Helmet, vest, gloves, whatever you can get your hands on, because chances are you’re gonna need it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Sergeant Maddock Tour
What’s that? You want to know what it’s like working with my sons? It’s a challenge. No doubt about it. The upside, I get to whup their asses in an official capacity. You’re smiling now, but you'll understand soon enough. They’re top agents, don’t get me wrong. I trust them to do their jobs to the best of their ability. But I know them. Hell, I raised them. I know how they’re going to react to something before they do. This job is demanding. It’s emotionally and physically exhausting. If I didn’t love them so goddamn much, I’d have transferred them to another continent. After the last year, retirement is sounding more and more appealing. I— Excuse me, I have an incoming call.

“Maddock, here. What? Boy, you are going to get on my last nerve. What did you do? You have got to be kidding me! What on God’s green earth made you think it was a good idea to bring a squirrel into the canteen? Followed you in my ass! Well, why did you open the damn window? Just… don’t move. Don’t do anything until I get there. Maddock out.”

I gotta go. Someone decided it would be a good idea to feed a squirrel outside the canteen window and now it’s pandemonium in there. Team Leader Sloane Brodie will be picking you up from here. You might wanna sit down and read a magazine. He might be a while. Good luck. You’re going to need it.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Honestly; each and every time I finish a book in this series I think to myself "That's it, this is the best one. There's no way Charlie will be able to top this story." Aaaaaand then another THIRDS book is added to the series and I start all over again.

Why does this keep happening to me? It's simple, really. The characters are complexly intertwined; a fluid dichotomy of strengths and weaknesses. More than a team, the men and women of Destructive Delta function like a family. Disagreements, laughter, misunderstandings and love, these are all a part of life. When push comes to shove, a real family sets aside their differences to have each-others backs.

The THIRDS series simply must be read in order. Each book peels back another layer, revealing increasingly intimate details about the individuals of Destructive Delta, and what make them who they are. As the conflict escalates between the Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, tensions rise, tempers flare, and the pressure cooker of public perception weighs heavily upon their shoulders. How do you continue to function as a team, when suspicion clouds your judgement and trust begins to crumble?

A roller-coaster ride of epic proportions, RACK & RUIN is a breathtaking and emotional journey that you simply mustn't miss.
