Author Spotlight: Penny Brandon and First Kiss

Carly: Today I'm welcoming Penny Brandon to talk about her latest book, First Kiss (The Looking Glass #2) and she's agreed to answer a few questions as well! The Looking Glass series is simply wonderful; it has elements of magic, romance, humor and heartbreak. The broad spectrum of emotions you put into your writing made me want to know more about what inspires your imagination when you write.  I'm sure your readers are curious too,  so let's get started!

Authors often talk about having a muse, or source of inspiration, that prompts them to begin writing a story. Sometimes it's a specific person, romantic place, music or certain images. Where do you turn for your inspiration?

Penny: When I found out others use pictures of hot men, I wondered why I hadn’t thought of that myself, but then I reckoned I’d only get distracted, so that wouldn’t work for me. I actually use my vast and somewhat eccentric imagination, but that’s what writing is about anyway. I stare off into space and visualize a scene in my head then I add some dialogue, and quickly write it all down before I forget.

Carly: I am a very visual person, so that makes perfect sense to me! When I'm reading a story and having a hard time picturing the characters in my mind, then it's difficult for me to connect with them. Now I know why I love your characters so much! One of my favorite scenes in First Kiss is when Joey and Brenn play poker for the first time. I love how much fun their playful bantering, and how cocky and confident they are, each sure that the other will lose! So tell me, what is your favorite scene in First Kiss and why?

Penny: The first shower scene. It’s when Brenn begins to find out how flirty and fun Joey really is, and that’s the side of Joey that would have made Brenn fall in love with him anyway.

Carly: Oooh, that's a good one and it's very sexy too. :) I love that even though the Looking Glass series has magic, the characters themselves are the type of people I could picture as my next door neighbors. If there is a real magic mirror in our world, it must be a well hidden secret! Since we are on the subject of magic, here's my next question. If you could have a magical power or item what would it be and why?

Penny: I’d have a magic typewriter that types up all my thoughts when I’m asleep and make it into a novel, like the one in Stephen King’s The Tommyknockers.

Carly: I was thinking I'd like to have a clothes dryer that magically folded my laundry once it was done! Your answer is better than mine, and not at all what I was expecting you to say. I love that our conversations always make me laugh, it's also one of my favorite aspects in your books. The bits of unexpected humor that light up some of the sadder scenes. I'm sure it's your real life sense of humor that inspires that balance, and it makes me wonder, do you have a fun fact or personality quirk that you'd like to share that readers would be surprised to learn about?

Penny: I absolutely cannot remember people’s names or faces. I once worked with a lady for six months. She left, and then about two months later, a woman came up to me and started chatting like she knew me. I had no idea who she was, and it was only when she said something about work that I figured it out. Talk about embarrassing.

Also I can never remember how to spell necessary. I get the c’s and s’s all wrong.

Carly: I'm not a great speller either. It was one of the subjects I really struggled with in school, but I've gotten so much better since I started cheating by using my search bar as a spell checker! One more quick question that has been burning in my mind since I finished First Kiss. Are you planning to write any more books in this series, and if so, where are you at in the writing process?

Penny: I have at least one more to write. That’s Simon’s Story. I think I’ll keep that as its title because so many have asked me when Simon’s story is coming out. Simon is the mirror’s keeper. He’s the one who has been charged with telling those who look into the mirror that they’re looking at their one true love. Simon wants to find his own love, and he can’t understand why he hasn't been given the chance. Is the love he has to share not good enough? Will he remain the mirror’s keeper forever?

Unfortunately, readers will have to wait to find out, as I haven’t finished the novel yet, but I’m hoping it will be out next year.

Carly: That's awesome news! Simon is one of my favorite characters, even though we don't see much of him in the first two books. I want to adopt him as my little brother, take him home, fill him up with my famous lasagna, and make him laugh!

Penny: Thanks so much for allowing me to promote FIRST KISS (The Looking Glass #2). I hope those who  get a chance to read it love it as much as I did writing it.

Choices (Looking Glass #1)

Marc was straight, always had been and always thought he would be, but when shown his true love in a magic mirror he was shocked to find out his true love was a man. Not only that, it was up to him to convince his true love they were meant to be together. All bad enough, but after finding Liam, the only way he's able to persuade Liam to go out with him is to offer him sex – even though that was something Marc was definitely not ready for.

Liam thought Marc was crazy. Marc was straight and he was talking about true love and making a life together, but Liam didn't believe in love and he certainly wasn't going to fall in love with a crazy straight guy regardless of how sexy he was. But he hadn't reckoned on Marc's pushy attitude or his offer of sex which, no matter how much he knew he should, Liam couldn't turn down.

First Kiss (Looking Glass #2)

The second Brenn saw Joey’s image in the magic mirror, he was hooked. The moment he saw him in real life, Brenn knew Joey was going to be his forever. Joey was flirty, and fun, and he had the most gorgeous smile, but then Joey told him he was dying. Though devastated, Brenn didn't want to give up on Joey, so he offered to look after him and make his last few days as comfortable as possible, but was that going to be enough when all Brenn really wanted was for Joey to live?

Brenn was everything Joey could have wished for; strong, built, and with amazing eyes, and Brenn was in love with him. That would have given Joey something to live for, if it hadn't been too late. He had about three weeks left, but that didn't seem to matter to Brenn. Brenn wanted to take him home, and Joey was willing to go with him, but on two conditions. He wanted Brenn to make love to him before he died, but no kissing.

My Review of First Kiss
4 of 5 stars
The day Brenn wandered into an obscure little antique shop and saw the image of his destined love in the magic mirror was the day everything changed. Brenn thought he was content with his life. He might have been a bit lonely, but he loved his job, enjoyed his family and believed that love would find him eventually. The man he saw in the mirror challenged all of those beliefs. He knew instinctively that they were meant to be together, but how to find him... and what to do once he did?

Joey locked eyes with the handsome stranger in the bar. Unable to resist flirting with the man when he approached, Joey was shocked when Brenn wanted to see him again, even after he learned that Joey was ill and lived at the local hospital. Having been given weeks left to live and with no hope of finding a cure, Joey tries to resist the magnetic attraction he feels towards Brenn. He knows that falling in love if off limits, it can only end in heartache for them both.

They say that the mirror never makes mistakes; but how could it be so cruel as to give each man his heart's desire, only to crush their hopes for love under the weight of impending loss?

While the story focuses primarily on the main characters, there are also several excellent supporting characters, including Joey's grandmother and best friends, Paul and Dave. I would have loved to see these characters developed further, as the insight readers are given into Joey's past through these relationships added depth of understanding to the story.

First Kiss a well written and edited love story that slowly and steadily builds into a crescendo. Brenn and Joey pulled at my heartstrings from the very first page. Everyone dreams of finding their true love, but no one expects that love to come with such a short timetable. Penny's writing style is unique and she develops this heart wrenching story with a unique balance of deep emotion and humor.

I would recommend First Kiss to anyone who loves books with romance, mysterious magic, and complex plot twists. Be warned, you will want to read with a box of tissues close at hand!

A copy of First Kiss was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Author Spotlight: T.M. Smith and the Opposites series

A huge welcome to friend and author T.M. Smith who is here today to share with us about her amazing series!

Guest Post:
Song and Scene
from Opposites and The Library

Hello everyone, TM Smith here *waves*…  let me start by first thanking Carly for hosting me today. I am the author of the Opposites series, an adult dystopian majorly M/M series set within a future society where to be gay/lesbian is the norm. To be straight labels you an Opposites and makes you an Outkast.

I’m a very visual person and while I was writing and researching Opposites, music and videos were slightly inspirational for me. I can hear a song, see a video or watch a TV show and then go write a chapter around it.

One of my favorite chapters to write was Secrets and Ice Cream. It’s a combination of all of the above… a song, a video and a thirty second scene from one of my favorite TV shows, Queer as Folk. In the scene (see link below) Justin is feeding Brian ice cream, and it was just way too short for my liking. I wanted to know more, see more, explore what could happen between these two men.

I listen to music constantly in the background when I'm writing, and I came across the song Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan, and it fit so perfectly with what I was writing, that I put it on repeat until I finished the chapter.

But then there is the inevitable editing process, and it just seemed like there was something missing with the chapter when I went back to edit it. That is when I came across the video Demon vs Heartbreaker. The intimacy and passion in just that kiss, I knew as soon as I watched it THAT was what was missing. So I took these three visual inspirations and molded and bent them to my will, and came up with the chapter Secrets and Ice cream!

Excerpt from Secrets and Ice Cream…

They settled on the floor and Kaden began feeding himself and his husband, deliberately missing Aiyan’s mouth then licking it off his face.

“Ahhh, that’s cold!” he exclaimed when Kaden actually did accidentally drop a spoonful on his bicep. He placed the bowl on the ground as he pushed Aiyan to lean back against the bed and began lapping up the sweet treat. Aiyan lay his head back and closed his eyes. “Don’t start something unless you intend to finish it.”  He placed Kaden’s hand over the bulge in his pants that was growing harder, and thicker with every kiss.

Kaden grinned wickedly, “Oh, I will.” He purred.

“Oh, my… Kaden.” Aiyan groaned as Kaden ran the palm of his hand over his cock, the friction from the pants under Kaden’s grasp causing Aiyan to grow even harder. Aiyan opened his eyes when he felt the cold steel at his bottom lip, opening wide so Kaden could feed him a spoonful of ice cream. He dropped the spoon back in the bowl as he dove in for another kiss, the ice cream melting from the heat of their sweeping tongues.

He followed the trail of liquid that was trickling out of the corner of Aiyan’s mouth and caught it with the tip of his tongue, before diving right back into the warmth of Aiyan’s mouth again. He pulled back with a sigh staring into Aiyan’s eyes and placing a few more chaste kisses on his lips.
Kaden sat the bowl of ice cream on the floor beside them and then, with his palms on the floor to brace himself, leaned into Aiyan. Their lips brushed briefly and right as Aiyan leaned forward, Kaden pulled back. He shook his head, “Don’t move and don’t close your eyes.” He saw the muscles in Aiyan’s upper arms twitch, and he thought Aiyan might ignore him. Then one corner of Aiyan’s mouth slid upward and he gave Kaden that lopsided grin with a nod of his head.

Eyes wide open so no emotion could be hidden, Kaden leaned in and traced Aiyan’s lips with the tip of his tongue. He did this several times before flat out licking Aiyan’s lips from the bottom to the top, just where his nose started. He then traced Aiyan’s lips again, but this time with his entire tongue instead of just the tip. Aiyan’s chest began to rise and fall quicker than before, but he stayed still as Kaden had requested.

A slight breeze from the open window blew into the room causing the candle at the foot of the bed to flicker. Kaden saw the golden light from the candle through Aiyan’s eyes and he pulled back slightly, cocking his head to one side, just watching and waiting. Aiyan took a chance and flicked out his tongue, barely nipping Kaden’s bottom lip, watching Kaden’s eyes to gauge his reaction.

When Kaden didn’t make a move to either pull away or come closer, Aiyan repeated the tongue tracing on his lips. He wasn’t nearly as resolute as his husband and soon the desire that had been building reached a crescendo. Aiyan leaned forward and stole a quick kiss, biting down hard on Kaden’s bottom lip.

Kaden growled then grabbed his face in his hands and shoved his tongue inside his mouth more forcefully, sucking and biting at Aiyan’s mouth. Aiyan let out a long, loud moan of pleasure. Kaden was already teetering on the edge of oblivion and Aiyan’s responsiveness pushed him over. He grabbed Aiyan by the shoulders and moved him down onto the floor underneath him. He captured his mouth again with another rough and fiery kiss as they begin grinding into each other.

Kaden leaned up and slowly drug Aiyan's pants down his legs, pulling them off then tossing them over his shoulder. He devoured Aiyan with his eyes as he stood and removed his pants as well.  He hovered above him for several long minutes, tracing his fingers over Aiyan’s lips then down and along his jaw line, moving slowly down to his chest circling each nipple.

The corner of his lip twitched as he reached for the bowl of ice cream. Aiyan shivered when Kaden first ran his fingers through the bowl, then painted circles around his already pert nipples with the cold, wet confection. He threw his head back and gasped when Kaden followed that sensation with his warm, wet tongue. Circling his nipple, licking the ice cream off, then biting down gently on the nipple itself. Kaden parted Aiyan’s legs with his and gently pushed his knee against his now throbbing cock. Kaden gently nudged Aiyan’s balls with his knee and watched his face as Aiyan’s eyes squeezed tight and his mouth hung open in a silent moan.
“So sexy.” Kaden whispered.

Do enjoy the video links I’ve included for your viewing pleasure, and be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post. Thank you again to Carly for hosting me! Until next time…

Release Day: Needing the Alpha (The Crane Curse Trilogy) by Liliana Rhodes

Needing the Alpha
(Werebear Shifter Romance)
The highly anticipated final book in
The Crane Curse Trilogy!

Synopsis

When Pinky Smythe's father goes missing, her entire life changes. The worst part is she knows exactly who is at fault--her.

Rafael LeCroix is the gorgeous new bear Alpha in Leeds Point, a town he only moved to to find the woman of his dreams, Pinky. She won't give him the time of day, but when he has to protect her from a killer, Rafael won't take no for an answer.

Together they discover the truth behind the Crane Curse, but will Pinky be able to save her father before it’s too late?

Excerpt

Pinky made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him, despite the occasional peck on the lips or the flirting. It was his fault, he pushed too hard when he first arrived at Leeds Point. He thought he could make it clear that she belonged to him and she'd comply. He didn't realize what a strong headed woman she was until they finally met. And it made him want her even more.

As she hurried towards the back rooms, a wolf shifter blocked Rafael's view and brought him back to his work. Rafael didn't recognize the shifter. He was large for a wolf, but nothing in comparison to a bear. The wolf flashed amber eyes at Rafael before leaning towards him.

"What I wouldn't do for a piece of that tail," the wolf said with a tilt of the head towards Pinky.
Rafael narrowed his eyes at the wolf as he held back his anger. Shifters were always looking for humans to screw around with. In general male shifters believed humans were more sexually adventurous than their counterparts and that female shifters wanted a mate. A lot of male shifters were idiots, Rafael thought.

Rafael grabbed another frosted mug to fill and switched to another tap, but the wolf moved in front of Rafael again. The shifter grinned at him and a flash of recognition drifted through Rafael's mind, but he pushed it away.

"I bet she tastes sweet," the wolf said. "Like Clare."

Rafael crushed the mug in his hand and grabbed the wolf by his neck, pulling him over the bar. "Don't you ever breathe her name again!" he roared.

Author Spotlight: Nancie Paz and The Ultimate Wolf + Rafflecopter Giveaway

The Ultimate Wolf

Werewolf Shifter Paranormal Romance

Synopsis
Austin, Texas. In this city there is a human being who possesses the ability to transform into a wolf at will. The U.S. government has been aware of his existence for five years and has relentlessly attempted to track this man down and lock him away for life. This lone wolf has managed to escape capture... but he has little time left. They're closing in on him.

Just when it seemed that all was lost, a woman came to his aid. But how can Kevin trust anyone in this world after five years of loneliness, heartbreak and hatred? And how can Amanda possibly fall in love when her past is tainted with trauma and tragedy?

Excerpt

"Are you a cat person or a dog person?" [Kevin] asked suddenly.
Amanda found this question to be absolutely preposterous -- what did her pet preferences have to do with anything? She could sense that he wasn't completely comfortable with what he was about to share and that in his own awkward way  he was trying to tell her his story. So She obliged.
"I wouldn't say I'm a cat person," Amanda said. "But my parents were. We had four of them . I had to change the litter box. Sometimes I wished we had dogs."
Kevin breathed in deeply, trying to figure out a way to explain the story without sounding like a complete freak of nature. He understood that he was obviously not normal -- but this was the first friendly face who had seen him shift into his wolf form.  He didn't want to scare her off.
"I was a dog person," Kevin said. Until I got older I didn't know how much of a dog person I was. I could communicate with them. It's not like they talked to me out loud or anything, but I always knew what they wanted, how they felt. I never had to command them or anything, they just knew what I wanted and did it."
Although Amanda thought that it was extraordinary, it didn't seem like something supernatural to her. An affinity for animals is not uncommon. As a lawyer she could practically read the minds of people who sought her legal counsel. Amanda almost always knew when she was dealing with an unscrupulous character, Kevin's gift didn't seem all that different from her own.

Interview With Nancy

Carly: First of all, I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by today! You were one of the first authors who reached out to me when I started my blog. I make it sound like that was such a long time ago, when what I really want to say is that I'm so glad we were able to make this happen because I am totally and completely in LOVE with The Ultimate Wolf and am super excited to have this chance to share it with my followers!

So Nancy, we've been chatting back forth for awhile now, and I feel like that's given me the opportunity to get to know you pretty well. Since we have the same quirky sense of humor at times, I'm going to warn you in advance that few of the questions might get a bit personal! I'll start you off with one about Wolf though, because ultimately that's why we're here.

Why did you pick the third person point of view? You know I love to host new and self-published authors but a large majority of romance novels are written in first person. Just take a look at the Kindle E-Book section on Amazon and you'll see what I mean. What made you decide to take your book down this path instead?

Nancie: Basically, I feel that for the story I wanted to write, first person wouldn't work as well as third person. Plus I just prefer it. If you're an experienced reader of fiction, you may have noticed that some of best novels you've ever read are written in the third person. I just felt that The Ultimate Wolf would work better with the third person perspective

Carly: I'm going to let my naughty side show a little bit with this next question, so be ready! 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is written in the first person, and although The Ultimate Wolf isn't a BDSM story, the scenes you wrote for your characters were deliciously steamy. What's the biggest difference between your writing style and that of an author like E.L. James, since you both target the edgier readers in the romance market?

Nancie: Well now. That's a controversial question! Oh boy... Fifty Shades, the hellspawn of Twilight? Haha. I could say quite a few things here, but I'm going to avoid directly answering the question. You may have noticed that she has a very polarized following. People either hate her books or they love them. Her success is a product of clever marketing, being in the right place at the right time and, to be fair, the books aren't as horrible as Stephen King says they are. The sex scenes are great.

Carly: I know I said it before, but I just have to tell you again, that I loved your book and just can't wait for you to write the next one! Is there anything I can do to thank you for sharing your stories with us readers? Even better, could I encourage you to write more? How about if I send you my babies... just until you've sold enough copies of The Ultimate Wolf to pay for their college!

Nancie: You can keep your babies. However, if you want to thank me for enriching your life with my toasting madness just go the book's amazon page at amazon.com and leave an honest review of my book there.

Obviously want I really want is for you to share my book with your friends; in social media; etc. Only do that if you're a toastamaniac though!

Carly: Haha! You know how much I love to review, so consider it done! So tell my followers a little bit more about The Ultimate Wolf. How long is it? Did you have an exact outline you started, or do your characters keep you guessing about the the end result?

Nancie: 43000 words. I don't know how a book is going to turn out when I first start writing it. This thing just wrote itself. In the self-publishing era, you don't have to abide by the old word count rules. Too many books drag on and on because of some arbitrary word count that you have to reach. It's ridiculous.

Carly: Besides the fact that I'm covered in awesome sauce; why did you choose to grant one of your fabulous interviews to me? It could have been risky, since Carly's Book Reviews is relatively new to the blogging scene!

Nancie: Because you're a butterfly and a motorcycle enthusiast at the same time. How can a butterfly ride a motorcycle? It just ain't possible. My brain melted and I was attracted to you right away. It was love at first sight.

Carly: I think I'm in love with you, too! Will you marry me?

Nancie: Sure.... nah, sorry. I'm afraid I won't marry you. You really wouldn't want me to anyway. I eat too much chocolate.

Carly: Darn it... but I guess my husband probably wouldn't have liked that idea very much anyway! We'll just have to share a big box of chocolates and call it a day.

 Author Biography

Nancie Paz is an amazon who walks the land searching for inspiration. When Nancie spots a dog, she sees a new paranormal romance in her head. When a cheesecake enters her mouth, she feels the deep emotions that her characters go through. Life constantly gives her the inspiration she needs to write her novels.

Anyway, back to the real world. As a reader, what can I say? I love books. They make me smile.

As a writer, I believe that being creative and not following trends or cultural norms to be the way to go. Now I know a lot of people like to bandwagon and write that which is popular, and hey, coddling to the fascination of the masses isn't the worst way to make some cash, but I still believe in the well of creativity we all hold within--one we should never be afraid to use. Even if you must write the next vampire or werewolf novel--you can make it different; special.

As a person? Well I think I'm quite okay!

Now, obviously I'm a little biased since, you know, I wrote The Ultimate Wolf and all. How can you not love your own book? It is my baby. This is the story of a werewolf and a lawyer--and both of them must fight tooth and nail to make their love work.

The enemy has infinite resources--they're dealing with a branch of the U.S. government. How can they possible escape from such a foe? And let's not forget the inner demons that Kevin and Amanda struggle with.

In this passionate story, both people attempt to do the impossible. I can't not be excited about my own book. I firmly believe that it is awesomeness covered in extremely awesome sauce.
And then you have The Toaster of Love series. I don't want to spoil it for you. Read the preview, check out the cover and decide for yourself if this is worth your time or not. If you're a fan of paranormal romance, you'll love it. Unique books await you... proceed at your own peril.

“You're the only one I want to control. The only one whose submission I want, need, and crave with every part of me, every second of every day.”
– Sergeant Logan Pierce Sergeant

Logan Pierce: Head of Houston’s elite SWAT team. He leads his squad with cool efficiency, taking down rough criminals while keeping his team safe. But behind closed doors he sets a darker part of himself free. He’s a Dominant in the world of Bondage and Domination. As a Dom, he’s controlled many submissives, but never had one for his own. That’s because there’s only one man he wants.

Corporal Clay Foster: Highly trained SWAT officer. He’s always the first one to face the dangerous situations of their job. Over the years he’d noticed his Sergeant’s secretly admiring glances and suspected his attraction. One night, with one kiss, he’s proven correct. Clay dives headlong into the rough passion of BDSM that Logan introduces him to. He submits to Logan’s control, accepting the sweet shackles that bind him to his Sergeant. But secrets, both his and Logan’s, force him to leave the newfound safety of his Dom’s arms.

Logan refuses to let go of what he’s wanted for so long, Clay as his own, proudly wearing his collar. Clay wants to be his. He knows it and Clay knows it too. Can Logan safely guide Clay through the obstacles that separate them until he can claim his submissive once more?
