Review: The Real Finn

The Real FinnThe Real Finn by Hollis Shiloh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Quite possibly the best book I have ever read.

Shad is an undercover vice detective that always works alone. He has a hard enough time trusting himself, and doesn't want or need a partner complicating his assignments by endangering his life. So when he is paired with a fragile looking boy whose helpless eyes and dark curls are more appealing than practical, he can't imagine a worse situation than having Finn underfoot.

Finn's fragile frame and vulnerable eyes are misleading; he's a survivor. Life taught him the hard way that the only person he can rely on is himself. He's an expert at creating alternate personas by immersing himself into his characters while working undercover.

Outcasts in their own world, the two men, despite their best intentions, are irresistibly drawn towards each other. Working undercover proves to be more complicating than either man anticipated, but drawing deeply on the well honed skills each has acquired over the years, they persevere in spite of looming danger. Unbeknownst to them, the most dangerous threat to their blooming love is not the enemy that they know, but the one that is hidden deeply within.

I have long been a fan of Hollis Shiloh's work. The complexity of her characters draws readers in. Using words to draw dynamic pictures, it is impossible not to be carried away on the emotional currents found in each story. While consistently entertaining readers of the M/M romance genera, Hollis continues to branch out by offering stories from varied landscapes, including the paranormal, historical, sweet, erotic and contemporary. Known for happy endings, her characters are always honest, living life as it comes and growing from their experiences.

The Real Finn touches on the darker side of life, where shadows exist and only the strong survive. With flashbacks depicting child abuse and neglect, this is not always an easy story to read. As a survivor myself, I connected to the raw emotions portrayed; no punches were pulled here and, while not graphically detailed, the story is honest and true. Using scenes with humor, tender emotionalism and pure happiness to balance the darkness so that the story maintains its impact without being overly disturbing to readers.

While the author generously provided a copy in exchange for this review; I must confess that the story brought me to tears. Not pretty tears, but the sobbing, snotty nosed, red eyed, messy kind that only deep emotions can invoke. It was truly my privilege to read this story, it deeply impacted my emotions, and is one I'll be looking back on for quite some time. Not taking the opportunity to experience this profoundly intricate story would be a true crime.

Review: Bite Me Tender

Bite Me TenderBite Me Tender by Kate Lowell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A paranormal tale with a dangerous amount of magical appeal!

Levi is a progressive man. Although he's technically the alpha, his werewolf pack is governed by a council, the member's contributions towards pack finances are voluntary, and he owns a business that employs both humans and shifters alike. The path toward tolerance was not easy for Levi; his reputation as a fierce and bloody alpha stems from his deeply troubled past. He's constantly at war with his inner wolf, but the years have lent him both inner strength and emotional compassion. The strength is essential for effective leadership of the pack, while the latter is a rare finding indeed. He credits Glyn, his half-witch boyfriend, with his remarkable transformation, and wants nothing more than to turn Glyn into a wolf so that he can run at his side.

Glyn has always struggled to manage both his humanity and unstable magical abilities, but Levi's presence over the last four years has helped him find balance. A gift he is sure will only become stronger once his transformation is complete. Months of unsuccessful attempts to bond witch and wolf have left both men frustrated. The pack needs new members and, with Levi unable to turn Glyn, other Alphas have started to eye his territory and challenge his ability to lead.

BITE ME TENDER is a fast paced paranormal romance that is packed with dominant alphas, steamy sex, crazy coven members, and enough werewolves to inspire readers to howl at the moon! It's a well written tale with elements of aggression, danger, territorial romance, and a hint of BDSM in the boys' bedroom! While not containing a lot of emotional depth, this book is sure to entertain mature readers with its spirited characters and moments of humor. The perfect read to take on an entertaining journey of fantasy and romance

Review: Too Busy for Love

Too Busy for LoveToo Busy for Love by Tamsin Baker
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A short and sexy love story!

Thomas works hard every day to reach his business goals as the expense of his personal life. The occasional loneliness he feels is easily ignored as he doesn't have time to invest in a real relationship. Lately, he hasn't even had time for the occasional hook up, which he assumes is the reason why his attraction to the sexy new gardener is so strong.

Luke is working his way through architect school while living with his parents. His relationships with women have left him feeling unsatisfied but with work, school, and his current living situation he hasn't had time to explore his attraction to men.

The sparks of sexual attraction instantly fly between these two men, but as they begin to learn more about each other the desire for something more develops... but will they find time in their busy lives to give love a chance?

This is a very well written and edited novelette. The characters are genuine and their emotions are portrayed in a very believable way. With the perfect balance of sweet and sexy this is one M/M romance that is sure to delight!

Review: Fated Mates - The Alpha Shifter Boxed Set

Fated Mates: The Alpha Shifter Boxed SetFated Mates: The Alpha Shifter Boxed Set by Michelle Fox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This set will make you howl!

A copy of Fated Mates was received in exchange for an honest review.

A spectacular compilation of shifter stories from some of the best writers in the genera! I finished this set pretty quickly, as I had already read about half of the books it contains, but even if you've read a few of the stories this is well worth the price! The group of authors brought together for this project entertain readers with sexy alpha males and sassy women who create enough chemistry together to make the pages steam!

A well written series of novella length stories that are sure to entertain. Even though many of the books are part of existing series, they all can be read as stand alone stories. Readers will not feel like they are missing out in any way, only wanting more!

Review: And You Still Are

And You Still Are (Max & Jamie)And You Still Are by Hollis Shiloh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Fully Unexpected!

A copy of And You Still Are was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is a definite sequel and the series should be read in order. You should also read book one, YOU WERE ALWAYS THE ONE prior to this review, as it contains spoilers for the first story.

The suspense and emotional drama in Hollis' latest story is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat! The story line is fast paced, full of complex twist and turns, evil exes and friends in surprising places . Hang on to your hats boys and girls, because this is one sequel that will blow you away! I must confess that I struggled a little bit with how I felt about this one at first. I fell in love with Jamie and Max during the first book, and I guess I was hoping that the guys would have grown a little bit more emotionally, considering the hurdles they overcame in order to be together. It made me a little bit sad to see that they were still dealing with the insecurities and communication issues that almost derailed their relationship in the beginning. The unexpected nature of And You Still Are adds a whole new layer of challenges for this dynamic couple to face. I ended up thoroughly enjoying the experience, and am looking forward to seeing where the next book takes them!

Review: Genie's Wish

Genie's Wish (Lifting the Veil, #2)Genie's Wish by Susan Laine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A grown up fairytale of magical proportions...this is not your grandmother's genie!

Philip "Pip" Butler studied archaeology because he wanted to be like Indiana Jones. He spent the majority of the year digging through ancient ruins in an underground cavern because he fell in love with history; that was most of the reason anyway. He was in love with Valdemar Velde, the sexy professor in charge of the dig team, and that served as extra incentive.

Since Val had yet to notice Pip in any way other than professional, Pip knew he needed to start finding some pretty amazing artifacts soon or the dig would be shut down and he would be separated from the love of his life. Unfortunately, the only thing they'd unearthed recently was a battered bronze oil lamp that was much younger than the city they were excavating.

As tedious as spending day after day unearthing history can be, sometimes it surprises you, and the "surprise" that whooshed out of the electric blue lamp knocked Pip right off his feet. Tall and bronzed, with long dark hair and mysterious blue eyes, Jinn is a wickedly handsome genie who takes being bad to a whole new level.

At first Pip was confused by the strength of his attraction to the flippant genie, but once Val is introduced into the mix, sparks fly and the real magic begins. What should have been the start of a sexy threesome is abruptly halted when their camp is invaded by mercenaries who are intent upon capturing Jinn for their own nefarious purposes. The lovers embark on a battle fraught with both physical and mental challenges as they attempt to stay one step ahead of the fortune hunters dogging their heels.

A generally well written paranormal adventure, GENIE'S WISH is a delightful addition to Susan Laine's Lifting the Veil series. The three lead characters have chemistry; a sexy ménage à trois that's hot enough to set the majority of their scenes on fire. The humor and fast pace kept me engaged up until the ending scene, when the tone suddenly struggled between emotional and erotic. Overall, it was an enjoyable story, with few editing errors, and a happy-ever-after that's sure to make reader's romantic wishes come true!

Review: Soldier - A Bad Boy Romance

Soldier: A Bad Boy RomanceSoldier: A Bad Boy Romance by Liliana Rhodes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When opposits attract sparks fly!

Dante is the strong silent type. He grew up in the "family" and has been a soldier all his life. Gia's plans to become a nun are interrupted by her mother's death. From the first moment Dante lays eyes on Gia he calls her his angel, but he knows his bad boy ways are going to keep them apart. Gia is instantly captivated by her gentle giant, and believes she sees more than just a tough guy in his amazing blue eyes.

When Gia's brother gets in over his head with a local gang of thugs Dante comes to her rescue, but in order to find love each must be willing to face some hard truths. The road to acceptance and love is best traveled side by side.

A well written and fast paced romance with action, humor, heartache and moments of pure tenderness that is sure to delight readers. It has a low heat level, and does contain a few tense scenes that depict mob related violence; not particularly graphic in nature, but may be disturbing to some readers.
