by Maggie Kavanaugh

Length: 204 pages
Genres: Gay (M/M), Contemporary, Mystery/Suspense, Romance
Six months into a relationship, things have heated up between political blogger Sam Flynn and FBI special agent Nathan Walker. Though Sam is happy with Nathan and proud of his own sobriety, he’s anxious about what their future holds. Things are also heating up in Stonebridge, Connecticut, as a series of deadly fires puts the community on edge and eventually threatens Sam's comatose brother. As Halloween approaches, fears rise that the arsonist will strike again.

When Sam encounters the main suspect, seventeen-year-old orphan Damon Blake, Sam’s not sure what to do. He knows obstruction might land him in jail, but he finds himself increasingly skeptical of Damon’s guilt. He takes matters into his own hands and investigates, but doing so means keeping Damon’s whereabouts a secret from Nathan and the police. Meanwhile, Nathan wonders what Sam is hiding and grapples with insecurities of his own. Sam wants to confide in Nathan, and Nathan wants to trust Sam, but they discover negotiating new love can be as dangerous as solving crime.
In the morning, Sam woke at the crack of dawn without his alarm—a new thing for him. Not being hungover was another. He stretched and smiled at the ceiling, glad he’d slept the night through without his nightmares returning. He contemplated whether to slip out of bed and make coffee or wake Nathan and finish what they’d started the night before, when the kitten rudely interrupted them.

Seizing the opportunity, Sam pressed his morning wood against Nathan’s bare ass and kissed his neck. With their busy schedules, they rarely had the same day off, but that day they could spend hours in bed, if they wanted. Nathan murmured something, on the border between sleep and wakefulness, and then he came fully alert with a slow blink and yawn.

“Hey you.”

“Oompf,” Sam grunted as Nathan rolled on top of him. “Good morning, Professor. You don’t mind if I call you that, do you?”

“If you do, I’ll throttle you.” Nathan sought out Sam’s hard dick and gave it a squeeze.

“Is that a promise, Professor?”

“Do you want it to be?”

“Maybe.” Sam’s breath quickened in anticipation. They often kidded about Nathan dominating Sam in bed, but aside from some occasional roughhousing and dirty talk, they hadn’t done anything about it. Sam wasn’t sure why Nathan was holding back, since he obviously relished being in control. From what he told Sam about his undercover sexual experiences, he’d enjoyed being dominant when his job required it.

And Sam was growing certain he wanted to do more than joke. The idea of letting Nathan take charge of his pleasure got him so fired up his cock twitched and leaked against his belly as they kissed. He wasn’t exactly sure how to ask, though, given Nathan’s reticence. And from the covert Internet research he’d done on the subject, Sam felt out of his league.
4.5 of 5 stars
Sam and Nathan are back and better than ever! Time has passed and, even though it's still in the new stages, their relationship is getting stronger. Inner Sanctum focused equally on the new mystery in Stonybridge and the challenges that develop in their relationship as investigating the crime takes its tole on their time and trust. These guys have the potential to go the distance, if they can keep the lines of communication open. They encounter a few self-inflicted road bumps, as all relationships do, and a surprising revelation has the potential to shake things up even more!

Not just a romance, Inner Sanctum is a well thought out mystery that kept me guessing right along with the boys. Every time I thought I had it all figured out a new set if twists and turns brought me right back to square one. The excellent storytelling and intimate character development are hallmarks I've come to expect from Maggie Kavanaugh. Thrilling, unexpected and engaging, Inner Sanctum is a hit in my book. I'm eagerly anticipating my next visit to Stonybridge, and once you've finished I'm sure you'll be looking forward to  Book 3 as well!
Maggie Kavanagh writes gay romances that explore flawed, human characters finding love. A recent Yankee transplant to Los Angeles, her heart still resides in New England. She went to graduate school for English literature and reads and writes voraciously, whenever she can get a moment alone. You can find her in the wee morning hours typing away with coffee at hand and cat in lap, happily embodying the romance writer cliché.

While she focuses mainly on contemporary romance, don’t be surprised if a historical or supernatural tale slips into the mix, as she’s always eager to try her hand in different genres.
