Never judge a sexy man by his cover.
Detective Beau Williams is hard-working, dedicated, and professional. He enjoys the finer things in life, but with his heavy caseload that includes what Beau suspects is a new serial killer, he has no time to enjoy much of anything. What the tall redhead needs is someone to shake him up a little.
Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like - or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes - the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.
Beau and Austin’s worlds collide right away when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give – unless the killer has the final say.
“I want to see you again soon.”
Austin’s swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple noticeably bobbing. “You do?”
Beau had to keep a lid on his emotions—there was too much at stake with his job, the killings—he couldn’t get lost in his own concerns until all that was handled. But he could still spend time getting to know Austin whenever he could manage.
“I do. But I can’t promise how reliable I’ll be under the current circumstances.”
“I get it, man. I won’t go all teenaged girl stalker on you.”
Beau sputtered out laughter. “Good to know.” He pried one of Austin’s hands from his lap. “Let’s try for Friday night. That’s a few days away. I’ll probably have to head back north to speak with that guy, unless we can get him transferred down here. I don’t want to be worn out when I see you again.” Beau winked.
Austin’s face flushed. “That sounds advisable. I’ll get lots of sleep between now and then too.”
Beau shook his head, laughing some more. He handed Austin his phone. “Put in your number then I’ll send you a text so you have mine. Sorry my charger didn’t work for your device.”
“Yeah. I need a new one. This model’s pretty outdated.”
Austin took his phone and Beau was about to explain how to enter a contact, but Austin was already tapping away. Beau wanted to slap himself over how he kept assuming that Austin wasn’t that sharp a guy. He remembered what his little brother used to say about judging a book by its cover and he felt ashamed.
I would’ve loved to have introduced Nicholas to Austin. They have such a similar sense of humor.
His eyes teared up and he took a deep breath to get a hold of himself. It was surprising to Beau how after so many years he could still think of Nicholas in the present tense. He knew that would never go away.
“Hey. You’ll get a break in the case soon. You put so much of yourself into your job. The department’s lucky to have you.”
Beau regarded Austin—sweet, funny, loveable Austin. He really did like him a lot and hoped he would find that they had some genuine common ground, that they wanted the same things in life.
M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys hot stories of men loving men forever after. They can be men in uniform, Doms and subs, rock stars or bikers - but they're all searching for the one (or two!) who was meant only for them.
When not indulging in her passion for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She is currently working on more installments of Sin City Uniforms and The Hampton Road Club, as well as the follow-up to Bryan and Aubrey's story from Rockin' the Alternative.
