Review: Gear Heart by Hollis Shiloh
Gear Heart by Hollis Shiloh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Heartwarming and imaginative!
Rejected by his family and classified as less than alive by society, Auden has paid a high price for the magical mechanical heart that saved his life after being injured during the war. Just because his heart whirs and ticks instead of beats doesn't make him feel inhuman. Being welcomed into Dr. Gregory's home and accepted as part of the unusual cast of characters that make up their family gives him a measure of contentment. While the strain of supporting his mechanical heart gradually weakens his body, his spirit is still strong.
When a stalker begins threatening Dr. Gregory's life, Auden calls the authorities to help catch the criminal that threatens their peaceful home. Owen, the handsome and kindhearted officer assigned to the case, can't help but draw Auden's eye and make him wish for more than a casual flirtation.
When the pressures of life and love begin to threaten them all, Auden discovers that he isn't as strong as he believed himself to be, and it's Owen who steps up to offer his support. The sexual chemistry between the two men is undeniable, but will the end of the case be the end of their relationship or will Auden get his mechanical heart's desire for more?
A well written and engaging story, Gear Heart is a dystopian romance that captured my heart. The characters are complex, the storyline is detailed, and Hollis once again presents readers with the perfect balance of sweet and sensual story weaving I've come to expect!
